Travel the ancient India through the oldest Indian monuments

Indian heritage is known to be one of the oldest and most ancient heritages of the world. All the spectacular tales of what glorious culture the country had in its ancient time can today be only known through the monuments and architecture that were built then. And yes, with the grandeur they stand now, these monuments only add to the pride of the nation and heritage. A number of times we all have heard or read about the ancient Indian heritage. Well, these monuments are the living proof of what is said and written and more.

KHAJURAO TEMPLES

One of India’s most ancient monuments, Khajurao temples are extremely popular for the stone sculpture carving in them. The temples have been named as one of the UNESCO world’s heritage site, and historians and tourists visit these places from all across the globe. Until 12th century there was more than 85 temples in Khajurao, maximum number of them was built by the rulers of Chandela dynasty. Today, over eight centuries later, only 20 temples have survived the test of time and weather.  The architecture of the temples is in Nagra-style and is mostly Jain and Hindu temples. The erotic sculptures and several other sculptures all craved in the temple walls reflects how modern thoughts and thinking process of people were there even in those ancient times. These temples depict the remarkable and extraordinary architecture which prevailed in the country in those eras.

SANCHI STUPA

The great emperor Ashoka left behind a legacy which till today not only defines his righteous beliefs and Buddha’s teachings but also showcases some of the best architectures of those times. One of the exquisite monuments which were constructed under Ashoka’s surveillance is the Sanchi  Stupa. With its construction dating back to the 3rd century BCE, this simple monument is built in a hemispherical shape and contains the relics of Lord Buddha. Amongst various stupas that were built during this period and later on, the stupa at Sanchi is counted as one of the oldest and remarkable one. The carvings and statues here reflect the Mauryan style of architecture. It is truly a wonder that the Sanchi Stupa has survived for so many centuries and till today stands strong making the monument and teachings of Buddha immortal.

QUTUB MINAR

The second tallest minar of India, Qutub Minar is one of the famous Indian heritage sites. Reflecting the architecture during the Sultanate dynasty in India, the construction of the minar started around 12th century by Qutub-Ud-Din Aibak. 74 meters tall, it construction was completed 75 years later by Aibak’s successor Iltutmish. After getting struck by lightning in 13th century, it was restored by adding two new storeys. The minar is built of red sandstones and has several inscriptions on it in Arabic along with many verses from the holy Quran. Prior to the beginning of Mogul era in India, Qutub Minar was one of the extraordinary architecture during the sultanate era. Currently declared as UNESCO’s world heritage site, the minar is surrounded by several other famous structures like the Iron Pillar, tomb of Iltutmish, Alai minar and Alai darwaza.
